FAQs

1. When and how do I apply for a summer associate position?

Law students who have completed two or more years of law school and are expected to graduate within one year are eligible to apply for our summer program. Interested students may submit a cover letter, resume and law school transcript to recruiting in our New York office. Traditionally, hiring for our summer program begins in late August and concludes in mid-November.

2. When and how do I apply for a new associate position?

Third-year law students, joint degree candidates, LL.M.s, JSD candidates and judicial clerks who have not participated in our summer program may submit a cover letter indicating their practice area of interest and office location, resume and law school transcript to the director of recruiting in our New York office. All applications are reviewed and replied to by mail.

LL.M. and JSD candidates are traditionally considered upon completion of their first semester in the program.

Judicial clerks are encouraged to discuss the timing of their interviews with their judge prior to applying. We welcome applications (cover letter, resume and law school transcript) at any time during their clerkship year.

3. Does the firm hire experienced (or "lateral") attorneys? If so, how do I apply?

From time to time, the firm does hire experienced lawyers. These lawyers are hired for specific practice areas and/or offices. Interested candidates may submit a cover letter, resume and law school transcript for consideration. We also work with search consultants.

4. When and how do I learn about the status of my application?

We review all completed applications (cover letter, resume and law school transcript) and reply to all inquiries. Given the volume of applications we receive, you should expect to hear from us no sooner than two to three weeks after we receive your application. You are welcome to call after that time period has passed if you have not heard from us.

5. What should I bring to my interview?

It is always a good idea to bring extra copies of your resume and transcript. A writing sample and references are not required.

6. How long will my interview last?

Candidates are invited for an initial interview or for a call-back interview. Initial interviews generally last about one hour. The call-back interview will last between three and four hours. Candidates applying to the summer program have the option to have lunch with two of our lawyers if your call-back interview is in the morning. If you do join us for lunch, you will be with us an additional hour and a half.

7. Am I required to go to lunch on a call-back interview?

If you schedule a morning interview, you will be invited to go to an interview lunch with two associates. Although many students find the lunch to be helpful, it is not required.

8. Who will I meet on a call-back interview?

You will meet with two partners and three associates for approximately 20 to 30 minutes each. If you join us for lunch, you will meet with two partners and four associates.

9. What expenses will the firm reimburse?

We reimburse reasonable travel, hotel and meal expenses for call-back interviews.

10. How long will it take to find out if I will receive an offer?

You should hear from us within 10 business days after your call-back interview. We do not make "on-the-spot" offers, instead waiting to ensure that we have received and can consider all interviewer comments. Applications are then discussed at a recruiting committee meeting, which generally occurs once per week.

11. After I receive an offer, may I return to the office to meet more lawyers?

We encourage you to make a return visit. You are welcome to request specific lawyers you would like to meet with to discuss subjects you would like to better understand. We reimburse reasonable travel, hotel and meal expenses for return visits.

12. If I am calling to accept or decline my offer or to ask further questions, whom do I contact?

Feel free to call our hiring partner, Nicholas Kronfeld, at 212 450 4950 (nicholas.kronfeld@dpw.com), the Recruiting Department at 212 450 4144, or any of the lawyers with whom you met during the interview process.
