Mr. O’Brien is an associate in Davis Polk & Wardwell’s Corporate Department and works in the Menlo Park office. He is assigned to the Real Estate Group. Since joining Davis Polk in 1998, he has completed rotations in the Capital Markets Group and the Credit Group and has worked in the New York and London offices of the firm.
Mr. O’Brien has experience in real estate acquisitions and dispositions, real estate acquisition and construction financing, leasing transactions and joint venture formation. He has regularly represented the Stockbridge Real Estate Funds in real estate acquisitions and financing transactions and recently advised them in their acquisitions of the Hollywood Park racetrack in Los Angeles and the Sahara Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. He has also represented American International Group, Altria, Railex, MPM Capital, Francisco Partners, and Affymetrix in connection with real estate transactions and the real estate aspects of mergers and acquisitions.
While in Davis Polk’s Credit Group, Mr. O’Brien advised both borrowers and lenders in a variety of secured lending transactions. His clients in the Credit Group included JPMorgan Chase Bank, Citigroup, Credit Suisse, the Mueller Group, the New York Mets, and Digicel. While resident in the London office, he focused on international capital markets transactions for clients, including Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch, Credit Suisse, and Amersham plc.
Mr. O’Brien’s pro bono practice has included work for Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, Citizens Advice Bureau, Hour Children, Human Rights First, and the Prince’s Trust. During his time in the London office, he also coordinated that office’s pro bono activities.
He graduated, with honors, from the University of Notre Dame in 1993 and in 1998 received his J.D. from New York University School of Law, where he was a staff editor of the Environmental Law Journal.
He is admitted to the bars of New York and California and is a member of the Real Property Law Sections of the New York State Bar Association and the State Bar of California.
