Ogden N. Lewis


Mr. Lewis is senior counsel in Davis Polk & Wardwell’s Litigation Department. He represents clients primarily in the areas of banking practices, lender liability, debtor and creditor rights, insolvency, and bankruptcy. He also has had extensive experience in drug products liability defense and in class actions generally. He has represented J.P. Morgan in a wide range of commercial banking and bankruptcy matters, both nationally and internationally. He chairs Davis Polk’s pro bono committee.

Among his cases, he has represented the official committee of commercial creditors in the Dow Corning mass tort bankruptcy. He recently resolved a major litigation on behalf of Morgan, and previously represented an official creditors’ committee in the Chapter 11 proceedings of Drexel Burnham Lambert. He has litigated aspects of many of the Southwest’s bank and oil company-related failures, and was extensively involved in the defense of the drug Bendectin throughout the 1980s. His pro bono cases include death penalty cases and cases in many areas of human and civil rights.

Mr. Lewis joined Davis Polk in 1974 and became a partner in 1980.

Mr. Lewis graduated from Harvard College in 1965 and in 1967 received a Bachelor of Philosophy degree from Oxford University. He received his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1973. He clerked for the Honorable J. Edward Lumbard, U.S. Court of Appeals, Second Circuit. Mr. Lewis served in the Navy from 1969 to 1972.

He has served on the Legal Assistance and Juvenile Justice committees of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, and is a member of the board of directors of New York Lawyers for the Public Interest. He is chairman of Citizens Union, and serves as treasurer and a member of the executive committee of the New York Law Institute.
