William B. Hoffman


Mr. Hoffman is counsel in Davis Polk & Wardwell’s Washington, D.C., office, advising in the fields of economic sanctions and anti-money laundering. He joined Davis Polk in 2004.

Mr. Hoffman graduated, cum laude, from Williams College in 1969, received an M.A. in 1971 from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and in 1974 received his J.D. from Harvard Law School, where he was special projects editor of the Harvard International Law Journal and national vice president of the Association of Student International Law Societies. He is admitted to the bars of the District of Columbia and New York. Mr. Hoffman is a vice chair of the ABA International Section’s International Anti-Money Laundering and Professional Ethics Committee.

Before joining Davis Polk, Mr. Hoffman served in the Office of Law Enforcement and Intelligence in the Legal Adviser’s Office at the U.S. State Department (2003-2004), and as Senior Counsel, International Affairs in the U.S. Treasury Department’s General Counsel’s Office (2000-2003), serving as Counsel to the Department’s Task Force on Terrorist Financing after 9/11/2001. From 1986 to 2000, he worked in the Office of the Chief Counsel to the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), serving as Chief Counsel from 1989 to 2000. Mr. Hoffman was an associate with the Washington offices of Mayer, Brown & Platt (1983-85), and Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Kampelman (1975-1983, including three years in-house with Arthur Andersen & Co., Société Coopérative, in Geneva), and the New York office of Lovejoy, Wasson, Lundgren & Ashton.
